Lymphadenopathy

Equip yourself. Learn about lymphadenopathy.

Hepatitis B

The illness known as hepatitis B is one of the possible medical causes of lymphadenopathy. This condition itself is caused by the hepatitis B virus (which, for short, can be called HBV). The condition begins as acute and in some cases progresses to a chronic phase.

Symptoms

In the acute stage of the infection, the liver becomes inflamed. This is where the term "hepatitis" comes from (referring to liver inflammation). Jaundice, in which the skin takes on a yellowish tone, is another possible symptom. Jaundice can also affect the body's mucous membranes, as well as the whites of the person's eyes. Itchiness of the skin is another possibility. In general, the person may simply feel unwell.

Once the infection becomes chronic, other things may appear, although it is possible for such a situation to be without symptoms. Should it be symptomatic, liver inflammation maybecome chronic, which can in turn cause cirrhosis.

Causes

Infection with the HBV is the medical reason behind hepatitis B. It is spread through blood exposure, including fluids from the body that have blood in them.

Diagnosis

In order to make a diagnosis of a case of hepatitis B, a doctor uses blood tests to look for either antibodies or antigens. However, interpretation of the results must be done carefully. Talk with a doctor for more details about this.

Treatment

In most instances of an acute case of this condition, treatment is not necessary. The majority of adult patients with this illness clear it spontaneously. However, there are some situations in which antiviral treatment is necessary for those who have the acute infection. As for those with the chronic form of the disease, treatment may be used to attempt to avoid the development of cirrhosis and cancer of the liver. However, there is no medication that is known to actually clear the virus from the infected individual. What they may be useful for is deterring reproduction of the virus, therefore hopefully lessening the damage that is done to the person's liver.
